Duncan MacIntyre

Born at Lindsaig Farm, Kilfinan, is from a farming family with generations of involvement in Cowal, Kintyre, Mid Argyll and Islay. He attended Tighnabruaich Primary and Dunoon Grammar School, and after graduating from Glasgow University spent 5 years in mixed practice before settling in Bute.  Having been confined to Bute for almost 30 years it was a particular pleasure to be able to extend Bute Vets area of coverage to include Cowal on Tony Black and Roger Canning’s retirement. Duncan is proud to be the old man of a young team serving the whole of Bute and Cowal.

The joy of true mixed practice is perhaps reflected in Duncan’s lifestyle, living on a smallholding and keeping, at different times, a large variety of livestock – Hens, ducks, geese, sheep, cattle, horses, dogs and even bees. 

Catriona MacIntyre

Grew up on the Isle of Bute and tagged along with dad, Duncan, on farm calls before she started school.   Apart from a couple of brief flirtations with career ideas such as a shepherdess or a zookeeper, she always wanted to be a vet, and graduated from Bristol University in 2001

Catriona worked for the Ministry of Agriculture during the Foot & Mouth Disease Crisis before graduating and then worked in mixed practice in Renfrewshire for 2 years before coming back to the island to join Duncan and form Bute Vets.

In 2008, she moved to Dunoon to head up the new branch surgery in Dunoon.  Since then, the practice has expanded to 5 vets, and is getting ever busier.  She loves the variety and challenges that a busy mixed practice brings – she could be delivering a calf by caesarean section before breakfast and trimming a budgie’s nails less than an hour later.  On the small animal side, she really enjoy dealing with eye cases, dentistry, acupuncture and poultry.  She loves getting out on farm rounds, with lambing time being a favourite and game bird medicine a growing interest.

In her spare time she loves walking with rescue dog Brahan, jogging, swimming or mountain biking when the weather’s not too bad.  If the weather turns nasty, she’s happier curled up with a book or trying to learn to knit.  When she first moved to Cowal, Dunoon Baptist Church provided a ready made second family and she is now an active part of the congregation there.
